Why I Chose a Donkey as My Hero
Donkeys have always fascinated me. For centuries, people have used the word “donkey” as an insult, as if these wonderful animals were foolish or stubborn for no reason. I think they are among the most misunderstood animals in history.
Donkeys are intelligent, observant, and capable of forming close bonds. They can be gentle with the animals they know and surprisingly fierce when danger threatens. Farmers have long valued some donkeys not only for carrying loads but also for protecting sheep and other livestock. They watch, listen, warn, and sometimes stand their ground against predators.
That is a very different picture from the supposedly “dumb” donkey of popular jokes.
I have also loved the donkey's place in the traditional stories and artwork surrounding the Nativity: the humble animal associated with carrying a family to safety. Those images have always represented gentleness, service, and quiet strength to me.
And, of course, donkeys are irresistibly cute.
These were the thoughts that inspired my two Pablo the Kind Donkey books. I wanted children to see a small animal whose strength comes from caring about others.
Book One: A Young Donkey Learns to Lead Through Kindness
In the first story, Pablo is a young donkey living on a friendly farm. He discovers that friendship cannot be demanded. It grows when we help others, pay attention to their needs, and treat them with kindness.
For me, that is a form of leadership worth teaching children. The best leader is not always the biggest or loudest animal. Sometimes it is the one who notices when another creature needs a friend.

A gentle, illustrated farm story about empathy, courage, making friends, and leading by example. Includes a song.

The second book takes Pablo's kindness further. In Pablo the Kind Donkey and the Lost Cat, he and Whiskers the barn cat help someone who is frightened and lost. Pablo is no longer simply learning to be a friend. He becomes a loyal protector who responds when another creature needs help.
The inspiration came partly from the old Bible story of the lost sheep: the idea that someone who is missing or vulnerable should never be forgotten. A life matters even when it is small, and real kindness means making the effort to bring someone safely home.
I also placed a gentle visual hint of a Nativity scene near the ending. It is there for readers who recognize it, but the story does not need a religious explanation. Its message is one any child can understand: look after those who are vulnerable, be loyal to your friends, and offer comfort when someone is afraid.

I wanted Pablo to look like the gentle animal I imagined: expressive, approachable, and full of personality. Both books use soft, vintage-style watercolor illustrations that give the farm a warm, comforting atmosphere.
The pictures help younger children recognize Pablo's kindness before they can explain it in words. His expressions, the other animals, and the peaceful countryside all make the lessons easier to feel and remember.
The illustrations also give parents and grandparents something to talk about with children: Who needs help? How do you know someone is frightened? What would you do if a friend were lost?
Two Books, One Continuing Lesson
I think the books work especially well together. The first introduces Pablo as a young donkey learning how kindness wins friends. The second shows what that kindness looks like when friendship calls for courage and protection.
At craft shows, many of my customers choose both books as a set. I understand why: children can follow Pablo from his first lessons in friendship to a story about loyalty and helping someone in trouble.
Both books are available individually, and families are welcome to explore them together through the links above or browse the Pablo donkey collection.
My hope is simple. When a child finishes reading about Pablo, perhaps the next time someone is lonely, frightened, or left out, that child will remember a small donkey who chose to help.
Kindness is not weakness. Sometimes it is the bravest thing we can do.
